Cypriot movie “Block 12” to contest for a candidacy in European Film Awards

The European Film Academy chose the Cypriot movie “Block 12” by director Kyriacos Tofarides as one of forty movies to contest for a candidacy in the 26th European Film Awards.

According to an announcement by the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture, the selection “is a great honor for Cypriot cinema in general”, since the movie has been chosen among hundreds of European films.

The awards, dubbed as the “European Oscars” will be given to the final candidates by the 2,700 members of the European Film Academy.

“Block 12” is a co-production with the Cyprus Ministry of Education. Panos Stathoyiannis is the scriptwriter while the leading roles are played by Costas Demetriou, Carmen Rouggeri, Michalis Marinos and Yiannis Tsimitselis.

The movie is about a dysfunctional family that is obliged to move to a small house in the wilderness, due to the financial crisis. Life changes when the place becomes the center of national and international attention, leading to humorous incidents.

The movie, if selected, will contest in the following categories: European film, Director, Actor, Actress, Screenwriter, Director of Photography, Editing, Art Direction, Costume Supervision, Sound Design and Music Composition.
